The Schwibbogen is carved from wood and shaped into a graceful arch. Traditional versions held real candles, but many today use LED or electric lights. Each arch often tells a story. You’ll see nativity scenes, snowy villages, forest animals, and even miners at work. These designs reflect the customs and landscape of the region. The Schwibbogen brings light and warmth during the darkest days of winter.
Miners first created it in the 1700s. They wanted to bring light into their homes during the long nights. The arch lit up their windows and lifted spirits. It became a symbol of hope and festive joy. Even today, families in Germany proudly place these glowing arches in their windows during Advent.
The Schwibbogen is more than decoration. It’s a treasured piece of German folk art. Every arch reflects fine craftsmanship and regional pride. Many still come from small workshops in the Ore Mountains.
